Spike

SpikeSpike’s been in and out of bands all his life. At least, he thinks he has. This all seems to exist in some kind of pink haze. When someone asks him about the past, he tends to just assume there must have been one at some point and keeps drinking. However, Spike sees the RockDogs as the band that’s going places, his last best hope to jump on board the gravy train to rock'n'roll stardom, so he’s keen to go along for the ride.

Musically he is a throwback to the AC/DC era of rock ‘n roll. Spike was once in a band called Thundering Hope which almost made it - the lead singer OD’d on icing sugar while they were in the process of recording a sure-fire smash and the record company canned them. He pretends not to care about success but underneath his nonchalance he is desperate for one last shot at stardom. When he makes an obscure reference to Thundering Hope you know things are getting serious for the RockDogs.

Spike is the oldest RockDog and may have fathered any number of children with many groupies over the years. One of his deepest fears is that he may be the father of any of the RockDogs’ young groupies and regularly grills his potential conquests - as well as other band members’ conquests - about their mothers. Not surprisingly, he doesn't tend to score so much after a gig any more.

Spike is easy to like and has a decent sense of humour when he allows it to show, even though he's a little slow. He plays a mean practical joke when given enough time to dream one up - we're talking fiendishly elaborate long cons here, not a simple glad-wrap-over-the-toilet jape, He's a pretty versatile musician if not flashy, and he can play any musical instrument as long as it's old-school rock. He settled on the bass long ago as he figured it was the easiest way to get in a band. Plus he can drink. A lot. It's scary, believe us.

Spike's a simple soul and he just wants to get on with people, at heart, which is why Baz's irrational hatred of him perplexes him so much. He actually does look up to the manager and admires his business smarts, figuring that he might just be the guy who gets the RockDogs that big break, so he just wants Baz to like him and displays an almost puppydog-like desire to please. This just infuriates Baz more, of course. Go figure.

Despite his good nature though, Spike's a little powerhouse of a man. He's been in more sawdust-on-the-floor rock'n'roll dust-ups than you've had hot dinners, and if you're going to be punching on after the gig, Spike's the fellow you want at your back.
